Part 1. Decoding AGI Impact
Miami AI Club Kicks Off Six-Part AGI Series with an Inspiring Inaugural Event
As we count down to the potential dawn of AGI—anticipated as early as 2025—the Miami AI Club launched its groundbreaking six-part AGI series with an energetic and insightful gathering. Curated by Dr. Nima Schei, MD, founder of Hummingbirds AI and the Miami AI Club, this inaugural event convened leaders from the public sector, academia, and the tech industry to explore the far-reaching impacts of Artificial General Intelligence on the workforce, society, and the global economy.
Accelerating the AGI Conversation
Dr. Schei opened the event by sharing his personal evolution—from initial excitement about AI’s possibilities to a deeper understanding of its transformative and potentially disruptive power. Emphasizing that AGI’s deployment may come sooner and more forcefully than many predict, he stressed the urgent need for leaders, communities, and institutions to prepare responsibly.
Keynote by Dr. Seth Dobrin
The momentum continued with a keynote from Dr. Seth Dobrin, the former Global Chief AI Officer at IBM. Challenging conventional thinking on AGI’s pace and scope, Dr. Dobrin offered a thought-provoking vision of where AI—and ultimately AGI—might lead, sparking lively discussion among attendees.
Panel on ‘AGI and the Future of Work’
A highlight of the evening was the panel discussion moderated by Tarja Stephens, focusing on how AGI will reshape employment, skill requirements, and economic development. Panelists included Francesca de Quesada Covey, Chief Innovation and Economic Development Officer for Miami-Dade County, and Antonio Delgado Fornaguera, Vice President of Innovation and Tech Partnerships at Miami Dade College. Together, they explored:
- The evolving workforce dynamics and how human-AI collaboration can enhance productivity
- Strategies for equipping workers and students with the right skill sets
- Qualities and approaches for leadership in an era of rapid AI advancement
Fireside Chat: SoftBank’s AI Investment Strategy
The event concluded with an illuminating fireside chat between Javier Villamizar 魔术师, Operating Partner at SoftBank Investment Advisers, and Dr. Schei. They examined SoftBank’s AI investment priorities, examined the burgeoning AI technology stack, and contemplated future trajectories for AGI development and adoption.
A Community United for Responsible AI
Hosted by Laura Chen, CFP®, MBA, Senior Vice President and Financial Advisor at Morgan Stanley, and organized by Sara Zargaran, co-founder of Hummingbirds AI and Miami AI Club, this inaugural event showcased the Miami AI Club’s commitment to fostering responsible AI innovation. As a not-for-profit exclusive action network, the Miami AI Club brings together visionaries dedicated to harnessing AI’s transformative power for positive global impact.
This event marked the first in a six-part series aimed at decoding AGI’s potential, guiding ethical deployment, and ensuring equitable access to AI’s benefits. With collective wisdom and a shared aspiration for responsible progress, the Miami AI Club looks forward to continuing this essential conversation throughout the year.
